History of Port Blair

1789

Port Blair was established as a British penal colony by Lieutenant Archibald Blair of the British East India Company.

1858

After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British developed the Cellular Jail to exile political prisoners. It became known as "Kala Pani" (Black Waters).

1942-1945

During World War II, the islands were occupied by the Japanese who established their headquarters in Port Blair.

1947

After India's independence, Port Blair became the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory.

2004

The city was severely affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami but has since recovered and developed into a modern town.
